Each year, all Grade 10 students in the Sun West School Division participate in a division-wide Reading Assessment using the Ontario Comprehensive Assessment (OAC). Data from the assessment is collected, scored, and reported back to classroom teachers to be used when planning for instruction.
“The OCA is a quick, whole-class assessment. Developed for Grades 7–10, this assessment provides teachers with a descriptive snapshot of students’ comprehension of informational text. Its primary purpose is to help students learn more about themselves as readers and to help teachers adapt and plan for comprehension instruction that is tailored to meet students’ needs”. - OAC Teacher Guide The OAC kit includes two assessments - “Sunk! Canada’s Worst Maritime Disaster” and “Carbon Offsets: Cop Out or Creative Solution?” These assessments are used to collect pre-test information at the classroom level, and post-test information at the Division Level.
